Soundwaves are some of my favourite places to swim
Since my first second-hand clock radio scored at the school fête in 1989, I have had a deeply abiding love for audio communication bordering on obsession. There’s something about the intimacy of broadcasting that works - perhaps leaning into one sense rather than the juggling of multiple avenues of perception. Knowing that when you’re listening to the radio, it’s a dialogue between the announcer and the listener in their sanctuaries and the hustle-bustle of life.
My favourite way to understand is through conversation, and I don’t mind if people eavesdrop.
It’s an honour to join a listener for their day, chores or journeys along the freeway. Starting out at Joy Media in 2006, I’ve followed my interests and enjoyed the challenge of making radio across many topics such as independent music, health, travel, finance, magazine and daytime programs. In 2010 I started on The Breakfast Spread on PBS (when I used a different name) and managed two years of horrifying alarms. Then I shifted to producing and presenting long-standing program Homebrew which was on Monday afternoons (and much better for my sense of time). Independent music is a huge joy to get amongst, and even better to chat with the artists creating it.
I’m currently making packages for Able Radio on Main FM, about all things disability related. Get in touch if you have a story you’d like to chat about.
A long time ago I made a podcast called Fully Sick, about disability and chronic illness. It’s on my to do list to find all the files. They’re on a hard drive in one of my doom boxes - I think.
I try to keep all of my bits and bobs on Soundcloud. More on that further down.
Broadcasting is the intersection of so many things I love - having a chat, soundwaves and creating resources for community. Here’s some links to the times I’ve been on the other side of the mixing desk.
